Welcome to the Fresh Coast Institute, where we believe that mistakes are pure magic. When we’re young we fall and scrape our knees. We learn the beauty that nature has to offer. We put the star-shaped block in the circular-slot- and our parents giggle. Then we grow up, and the system of grading (invented in the 1600s) tells us that mistakes are bad. Standardized education tells us we are a failure when a program doesn’t suit the way we learn. We download this “truth” into our core and carry this into the way we educate. Educators are so afraid of making mistakes that we don’t even admit when we make them. We won’t take risks to learn how to educate future generations of learners in a better way if that means a handful of learners have a few bumps in the road along the way. We stopped trying new things. WE stopped learning. Can it really be worse than 40%+ college dropout rates?
